Tylor Chase’s father is shedding light on the former Nickelodeon star’s apparent struggles after videos of his son living on the streets went viral.

“For over a decade, the family has sought treatment options for Tylor, including support for substance use as well as mental health care,” Joseph Mendez Jr. told the Daily Mail (via the New York Post) in an article published Wednesday, December 24.

As the National Enquirer previously reported, the Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide alum has been filmed and photographed on the streets of Riverside, California. However, Riverside Police Department public information officer Ryan Railsback told TMZ that the 36-year-old doesn’t want help to get back on his feet.

According to Chase’s father, the former child actor has been dealing with addiction since he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in 2015.

A few years later, around 2021, his family convinced him to go to rehab, but Mendez told the Mail that Chase did not want to continue with treatment.

“He later chose to discontinue medication and resumed substance use,” Mendez claimed.

The New York Post reported that Chase told reporters he is taking Prozac, Adderall, Sudafed, Wellbutrin and Zoloft, which were prescribed by a psychiatrist. However, he denied having any form of mental illness.

“His family has been trying for many years to get him the support he needs, but ultimately, he must be willing to accept help,” Mendez said.

A woman believed to be Chase’s mother also told the person who set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist him that he “refuses” help and “can’t manage money or his meds by himself.”

“He’s a wonderful person when he’s Tylor,” said Mendez, who lives in Georgia.

Chase, who was checked into a motel room ahead of the Christmas holiday thanks to former child star Daniel Curtis Lee, has said he thinks he may return to Georgia in the near future.
