Around 3.6 million “burst-proof” HydroTech hoses are being recalled because they do in fact burst, resulting in at least 29 injuries including temporarily impaired hearing, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Winston Products is recalling HydroTech 5/8-inch Expandable Burst-Proof Hoses manufactured on or before Aug. 31, 2024. The recalled hoses were sold in 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 feet lengths in various colors, as well as a 60-foot version included in an “Auto Care” kit with tire glides.
To find the date code markings, users must remove a black rubber washer located on the end of the hose that attaches to the spigot. Hoses with no markings or a marking ending in -211, -212, -213, -214, -221, -222, -223, -224, -231, -232, -233, -234, -241, -242 or -243 are included in this recall. Date codes on some hose packages are listed in a month-year format, such as 0824 for August 2024.
Winston Products has received 222 reports of the recalled hoses bursting, resulting in at least 29 reported injuries, including a bone bruise, two sprains and five reports of temporarily impaired hearing from the sound of the hose bursting.
The recalled hoses were sold at Ace Hardware, Amazon, Do It Best, Home Depot, Target, Walmart and other stores nationwide and online from January 2021 through April 2025 for between $20 and $136.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled hoses. Those who purchased the hoses from Ace Hardware, Do It Best, Home Depot or Walmart can return the hoses to those stores for a full refund. Those who purchased the hoses elsewhere should cut off the regulator-end of their hose and submit a photo of the cut hose with the date code visible with the consumers initials and the date written in permanent marker on the regulator at hydrotechproducts.com/recall to receive a refund.
