Jail time briefly turned Luigi Mangione into a Swiftie!
“I downloaded a bunch of Taylor Swift and Charli XCX,” the accused killer, who is at Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center in New York awaiting trial for the 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, wrote in an email posted on X on Tuesday October 28 and authenticated by TMZ.
The Maryland native had listed “27 things I’m grateful for” in honor of his 27th birthday in the letter, which was dated June 3.
“I’ve never really listened to either of them, but some phony list of my favorite music circulated on social media,” the inmate, who has a tablet for his use behind bars, said of the pop stars.

“Rather than be a buzzkill and set the record straight, I figured I’d see what all the hype was about. So, I’m walking laps on the top tier of my unit listening to ‘Cardigan’ by T Swift,” he continued.
But his newfound fandom was short-lived. Another inmate, “King,” called “me over to see what I’m listening to,’” he revealed. “He scolds me for a while, then replaces all my music. Now I listen to ‘Lil Durk.’ ”
On the letter, he crossed out “Cardigan” and wrote “ ‘Dis Ain’t What You Want’ by Lil Durk” instead. The Chicago rapper is currently behind bars in L.A. awaiting trial in connection with a murder-for-hire plot. He has pleaded not guilty.

Mangione faces a second-degree murder charge, along with nine other counts in New York related to the December 4, 2024 shooting, as well as charges in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested on December 9, and in federal court.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced in April that federal prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
