A source tells the National EnquirerBill Murray continues to grapple with the loss of eldest brother Ed Murray — who inspired 1980’s Caddyshack — five years after the finance executive’s death.
“Bill has not been the same since Ed’s passing,” says the source. “The Murray brothers have always been extremely close, and that was like losing a limb for Bill.”
The Ghostbusters star, 75, grew up as one of nine kids, with three sisters and five brothers. In 2020, firstborn Ed’s death was revealed via the family’s golf apparel line, William Murray Golf, on Instagram.
“It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of the legend Ed,” read their post. “His loss is a hole that will never be filled.”
He was 76 years old.
“Years later, the pain remains visible on Bill’s face,” shares the source.

That’s not the only loss to seemingly still haunt the Saturday Night Live alum: In 2025, he admitted to being brought to tears by video of late costars Gilda Radner and John Belushi during the taping of SNL50: The Anniversary Special.
“It was surprisingly emotional,” he said on Sirius XM’s Sway in the Morning. “I wept three times in the show. It really got to me.”
According to the National Enquirer‘s source, the father of six no longer seems as career-focused as a result of his grief.
“He still has a lot of filmmakers who worship him and would write the perfect role for him,” points out the source. “But Bill simply limits his availability to those people.”
