Sober Songs the Musical

A new musical exploring addiction, connection, and the messy road to recovery will begin performances next month in New York City.

Sober Songs,” written by New York Times bestselling author Michael Levin, will preview on Aug. 30 ahead of an official opening night on Sept. 6, with a limited run scheduled through Sept. 21 at Theater Row’s Theatre Three.

With book, music, and lyrics by Levin and direction by Chris Mackin, “Sober Songs” follows six young adults navigating sobriety at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting led by their tough but warm-hearted sponsor, Cap. What begins with biting humor and self-deprecation gradually gives way to raw vulnerability, as the characters confront identity, love, relapse, and healing in a world where emotional honesty is often the first step toward transformation.

“Sobriety gave me everything, and I wanted to share that message through ‘Sober Songs’,” Levin said. “Recovery isnt just possible, its powerful, joyful, and full of life. 12-step recovery creates a unique situation where differences fade away and lives are transformed. Meetings create a safe space for people from diverse backgrounds to come together with a common goal.”

Mackin, who directs the production, brings his own personal connection to the subject matter.

“Having witnessed loved ones struggle with addiction, I was immediately drawn to the shows raw honesty and its powerful blend of country, rock, and blues,” he said. “For me, this production is about more than recovery — its about connection, resilience, and the power of community.”

The shows creative team includes musical direction and arrangements by Brian Reynolds, choreography by Megan Roe, scenic design by Joshua Warner, costume design by Izzy Kitch, lighting design by Annie Garret-Larson, and sound design by Travis Joseph.

“Sober Songs” runs approximately two hours with a 15-minute intermission and plays Tuesdays through Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets, priced from $39 to $89 plus fees, are available now at bfany.org, by phone at 212-714-2891, or in person at the Theatre Row Box Office, open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. A $10 discount is available for all tickets purchased before Aug. 15.
