Anderson Cooper‘s not-so-subtle dig at the future of 60 Minutes did not go unnoticed by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
“The 42-year-old editor was also not especially pleased by Cooper using the CBS News platform to take a thinly veiled swipe at her,” Status‘ Oliver Darcy wrote, per The Daily Beast on Friday, May 22.
“And it must have especially hurt after Weiss personally made overtures to Cooper with the aim of giving him a larger presence at the network, only for the star anchor to turn her down,” Darcy continued.
“I hope 60 Minutes remains 60 Minutes,” he told audiences during his final appearance. “There’s very few things that have been around for as long as 60 Minutes has and maintain the quality that it has. I think the independence of 60 Minutes has been critical. And I think the trust it has with viewers is critical to the success of 60 Minutes.”
Cooper isn’t the only one at CBS who is uncomfortable with Weiss’ leadership. Puck News reported on Monday, May 18, that insiders at CBS have their own qualms with her lack of experience when it comes to running the network.
The outlet also claimed that Paramount executives have reportedly discussed scaling back Weiss’ role at CBS News following the continued negative press surrounding her position.
Sources told the outlet that there have been conversations about potentially shifting day to day oversight of programs like 60 Minutes, CBS Mornings and Evening News to another executive while Weiss focuses more on digital growth.
