An Alabama mom asked her neighbors for a small favor. What she got back was an entire community showing up for her son.

ABC News reported on Tuesday, August 4, that Leah Farrow, 47, posted in her neighborhood Facebook group asking if anyone would let her 11-year-old son, Soren, who has autism, trick-or-treat at their homes for his summer birthday.

She hoped a handful of families might say yes.

In the months leading up to his birthday, Soren had taken to pretend-playing trick-or-treat at home, dressing in part of a costume and knocking on his own front door.

Instead of just a handful, 83 households volunteered, decorating their homes with “Happy Birthday” signs and preparing treats and toys, including LEGO sets, just for Soren, according to ABC News.

“I did not expect it at all,” Farrow told People of the response.

Soren, who has come to love trick-or-treating for the walking and doorbell-ringing it involves, dressed as a banana and visited 70 homes over the course of the celebration.

“He was so happy. I mean, he was on a mission,” Farrow added.

Neighbors went beyond simply handing out candy, asking Farrow what Soren’s favorite snacks and toys were so they could personalize each stop. Farrow later shared the celebration on TikTok, where it resonated with viewers far beyond her own street.

The comment section quickly filled with people moved by the response. “Your neighborhood entered HIS world instead of making him fit into theirs,” one person wrote, adding that it left them feeling emotional.

Another joked that the moment taught them three things, including that “if he decides to elope, the community knows him,” and that they personally needed to “step up” their own front-door decorating.

Several commenters pointed out the small details that stood out to them, noting that some neighbors wore costumes and handed out full birthday gifts, not just candy.

Others said the gesture went beyond Soren himself. “And they are all teaching their children kindness too,” one wrote.

One user called it one of the most profound examples of community support they’d ever seen, while another joked that Soren had officially become “a celebrity” on his own street.

Another TikTok user summed up the sentiment shared across the thread: “My faith in humanity is restored.”

She said watching her son embraced so fully brought a sense of relief many parents of autistic children rarely get to feel, and she hopes the story encourages others to reach out to families like hers, even in small ways.

“My overwhelming feeling was really just, like, relief, because I know he’s safe here,” she told ABC News.
