Train operators in California recently thought they saw a dead animal inside a tunnel, but when they saw the animal move the next day, they called for rescue.

Animal Care and Control San Francisco said a dog named Roo has been safely rescued after hiding in a Caltrain tunnel for two days. Train operators who saw the dog on the first day thought he was a dead animal. But on the second day, a driver saw him move.

“He was so still they thought he had been hit by a train and was injured,” rescuers said in a video posted on Instagram. But it turns out Roo was “just scared and hunkered down.”

A video shows Animal Control Officers Pone and Borg entering the dark tunnel with Caltrain personnel to search for the dog, who was “terrified at first then was thrilled to be rescued,” the agency said.

The dog had a microchip that revealed his name, and the fact that he had only recently been adopted.

“He was recently adopted and got spooked and ran,” the agency said. “His person was looking everywhere for him and was thrilled to be reunited with him.”
