Authorities in Florida are seeking the public’s help identifying a suspect who abandoned a dog with numerous stab wounds and other injuries, leading to his death.

Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) said a dog was rushed to their facility in critical condition at around 5:30 p.m. on June 26, after being found on the roadside near Blanding Boulevard in the Argyle Forest neighborhood.

The dog, since dubbed “Manatee,” was a large, unneutered male wearing a metal chain collar, and had no microchip or tags. Manatee was found wrapped in a shower curtain and “actively bleeding” from multiple puncture wounds all over his body.

Staff stabilized Manatee and prepared him for transport to an emergency veterinary hospital. There, veterinarians determined Manatee was suffering form multiple stab wounds, blunt force trauma to his chest, and paralysis or total loss of sensation in his hind legs.

“Based on the location and pattern of his injuries, the veterinarian determined they were consistent with someone standing over the dog’s body and repeatedly stabbing him,” ACPS said. “The entrance wounds were so deep that they penetrated his internal organs and struck his spinal column.”

Despite efforts to save Manatee, his injuries were deemed too severe and he was humanely euthanized.

Now, ACPS is seeking the public’s help identifying the animal, who owned him, and who is responsible for his injuries.

“Your information could help identify the person responsible and bring justice for Manatee. NO DETAIL IS TOO SMALL,” ACPS said.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to submit an anonymous tip to First Coast Crime Stoppers at

1-866-846-TIPS (8477), or through MyJax by calling 630-CITY (2489), or by visiting Animal Care and Protective Services in person.
