Semi-Truck Leaves Highway, Barrels Through Yards And Crashes Into Oklahoma Home

An investigation is underway after a semi-truck left the highway and drove through multiple backyards before crashing into an Oklahoma home with three people inside.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department said crews responded at around 10 a.m. Monday to a report that a semi-truck had crashed into a home on the 4700 block of NW 70th Street after leaving the Northwest Expressway.

Officials said the truck was traveling westbound on the NW Expressway when it suddenly crossed the eastbound lanes and left the highway. The truck traveled through multiple backyards, striking a chicken coop and killing 8–10 of the birds, before crashing into a home with a family inside.

The driver had to be extricated from the truck by firefighters, and he was transported to a hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The truck struck an electrical panel and a gas meter, and gas and power were shut off as a precaution. Multiple surrounding homes were temporarily evacuated.

Firefighters remained on scene to shore up the damaged home while heavy wreckers worked to remove the truck.

Fire Captain Scott Douglas told KFOR that a witness driving behind the truck described an “erratic movement” as it veered into oncoming traffic and left the roadway, and that there were “no brake marks on the road.”

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, but preliminary findings suggest it may have been a medical episode.
