With apartment living on the rise and homeownership becoming increasingly out of reach, renters are finding innovative ways to transform their living spaces.

From budget-friendly makeovers to smart home tech upgrades, the Rently 2025 Apartment Design & Decor Trends Report reveals how renters are styling their homes to fit both function and personality. The report, based on a survey of 500 U.S. renters, highlights key trends shaping rental living this year.

“Renters today arent just looking for a place to live; theyre rethinking how a space can work for them,” says Merrick Lackner, CEO of Rently. “Aesthetics matter, but so do adaptability, functionality, and self-expression. Renters are making more intentional choices, blending style with smart solutions that fit their evolving lifestyles.”

Budget-conscious upgrades: 38% of renters plan to spend between $101-$500 on décor, while 29% are willing to invest up to $1,000 to make their space feel like home.

Cozy and minimalist aesthetics dominate: 87% prefer staying in over going out, leading to a rise in moody, well-curated interiors with soft, layered lighting (79%) and minimalist design (72%) featuring clean lines and warm neutrals.

Smart home technology is a priority: 71% of renters want built-in security cameras, 33% prefer keyless entry, and 50% want smart lighting to enhance their spaces.

Pet-friendly design matters: 69% of renters are decorating with their pets in mind, ensuring spaces accommodate furry companions.

Outdated trends are fading: Chevron prints (66%), paisley patterns (71%), and the Coastal Grandmother aesthetic (63%) are falling out of favor, replaced by curated, layered spaces with vintage influences.

Focus on living rooms and bedrooms: 46% of renters prioritize their living room, while 44% refresh their bedrooms. Outdoor spaces are also getting attention, with 11% transforming balconies and patios into functional retreats.

Renter-friendly upgrades thrive: 45% plan to rearrange furniture, 37% will use plants, and 32% will take on DIY projects to personalize their apartments.

Sustainability matters — but affordability comes first: 69% of renters are interested in eco-friendly décor, but 49% say cost determines whether they commit to sustainable choices.

Social media shapes design trends: 30% of renters look to TikTok for inspiration, while 31% turn to Pinterest to craft their dream space.

As flexible, tech-savvy, and personalized living becomes a priority, property managers and retailers have an opportunity to offer solutions that meet renters growing expectations.

“The future of rental living is about more than four walls,” Lackner says, “its about creating a space that truly feels like home.”
