‘Most Folks’ at CBS Won’t Miss Stephen Colbert: ‘Final Show Can’t Come Soon Enough’ (Exclusive)

Not much longer now.

During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert revealed that The Late Show is officially coming to an end on Thursday, May 21.

“The final show can’t come soon enough for most folks at the network,” a source tells the National Enquirer. “They’re sick to the back teeth of Colbert’s raging ego, his constant attention seeking and petty histrionics.”

To be fair, the source notes, the feeling is pretty mutual.

“Stephen’s only going through the motions at this point,” the source says of the 61-year-old host. “That makes for a lousy vibe and it’s doing nothing to improve the shattered morale of his employees — most of whom will be out of a job soon enough, no thanks to him.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was rumored to have been axed over financial pressures and declining viewership.

Despite backlash from fans and fellow television hosts like Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman, CBS execs are standing by their decision, as the Enquirer previously reported.

And the ratings back them up. The talk show had its worst-performing January ever, averaging just 285,000 viewers, per the New York Post.

“The fact [that] his ratings are in the pan does justify the decision to cut ties,” says the source. “But it also means a sharp decline in revenue and there are some folk at the network who are flat-out accusing Stephen of sabotaging the show on his way out the door.”

“Whatever his motive,” adds the source, “the next few months can’t go away soon enough!”
