For many Americans, the real boss at home has four legs and a tail.

A new survey of 2,000 dog owners, commissioned by Darwins pet food and conducted by Talker Research, found that the average person makes 27 decisions per month based on their dog — influencing everything from work schedules to weekend plans.

Dog owners reported calling off social plans an average of 4.4 times each month because their dog cant come along. They also cut outings short 5.8 times per month and adjust their work routine or location 3.3 times in an average month to accommodate their pet.

The study specifically looked at so-called DINKWADs — dual income, no kids with a dog — and found this group to be especially devoted. Seventy-one percent of DINKWAD respondents said their life revolves around their dog, compared to 61% of other dog owners. A full 63% said they consider their dog their “child,” versus 54% of others.

More than half said their dogs mood affected their choices: 57% of DINKWADs admitted staying home when their dog looked lonely or sad, and 52% said theyve felt guilty for not spending enough quality time. Another 56% skipped a function entirely because their dog looked “too cute and comfy” and they wanted to join them.

“Our dogs are more than just pets; they shape every aspect of our lives,” said Gary Tashjian, founder and CEO of Darwin’s pet food. “Its clear that dog owners are deeply invested in the well-being of their furry companions. In addition, our study found that in households with dual incomes, pet parents are not only more likely to adjust their schedules for their pets, but they also spend significantly more to make sure they live happy, healthy lives.”

That added expense is quantifiable. On average, DINKWADs spend $172.60 more annually on their pets than other dog owners. Their annual averages include $194.60 for vet bills, $183.80 for food and essentials, and $128.60 for treats, toys, and “fun” items.

They also reported being more diligent about pet food quality. Eighty percent of DINKWADs said they review ingredient lists and 66% consider brand reputation when choosing food. Theyre also more likely to splurge on extras like multiple dog beds in different rooms (47%), personalized accessories such as engraved tags and monogrammed blankets (41%), and pet furniture (39%).

When asked who they would rather spoil, 41% of DINKWADs chose their dog — compared to just 14% who said themselves. Special occasions get the full treatment, too: 44% celebrate their dogs birthday by preparing a favorite meal, and 31% take them on a special outing such as a hike or trip to the beach.

“The results of the survey highlight just how invested this group of pet parents are,” said Tashjian. “Not only do they spend significantly more annually on their dogs, but they also go above and beyond by researching pet foods and choosing high-quality ingredients. Their pets arent just animal companions — theyre family, and theyre willing to celebrate and spoil them accordingly.”
