Man Dies After Kayak Sinks In Puget Sound And Good Samaritan Pulls Him To Shore
A 60-year-old Washington man died Tuesday after his kayak sank in Puget Sound and a good Samaritan pulled him to shore, officials said.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and emergency medical personnel responded shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a man “screaming for help” about 100 yards offshore in Puget Sound near Dash Point Park in Dash Point. Witnesses went down to the water and saw a man clinging to a sinking kayak while calling for help.
A good Samaritan entered the water on a paddleboard, but by the time they reached the man he was unresponsive and the kayak was fully submerged. The good Samaritan pulled the man back to shore, where first responders were waiting.
EMS personnel immediately began CPR and continued attempting life-saving measures for over 40 minutes before he was declared dead.
The sheriff’s office said the Marine Services Unit recovered the kayak from the water. It is unknown why the kayak sank, and the investigation is ongoing.
