A California man is facing charges for allegedly fatally shooting a friend’s dog before forcing the friend at gunpoint to bury the animal, authorities said.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said its Animal Services division on Jan. 12 received a report of an alleged animal cruelty incident in Winton. The victim reported that while at a friend’s home, the friend shot and killed his dog, then forced him at gunpoint to bury his pet.

Investigators determined the suspect, identified as 57-year-old James Charles Morales, allegedly became “upset during what initially appeared to be joking between the parties.” Morales then allegedly produced a handgun and threatened to shoot the victim’s dog. He then allegedly shot the dog multiple times, killing it, before pointing the gun at the victim and forcing him to bury the animal.

Just before executing a search warrant at the residence on the 6500 block of Nicholas Drive, deputies spotted Morales leaving the residence in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop to take him into custody.

A search of the residence revealed the remains of the dog in a “shallow grave” alongside the residence. “Multiple” spent 9mm cartridge casings were located in the backyard, and the 9mm handgun was found inside.

The dog’s remains were transported for necropsy. Morales was booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of animal cruelty, kidnapping, felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and assault with a firearm.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Merced County Sheriffs Office at (209) 385-7445.
