Man Allegedly Impersonated FBI Agent In Attempt to Free Luigi Mangione From Jail

A Minnesota man wanted Luigi Mangione to walk free again, and seemingly took drastic measures to make that happen.

Mark Anderson, 36, allegedly attempted to spring Mangione, 27, from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn this week, according to law enforcement sources that spoke to ABC News.

Upon arriving at the detention center, Anderson went to the intake area and insisted he had a court order “signed by a judge” granting an inmate’s release, per a criminal complaint obtained by the outlet. Law enforcement sources told ABC News the inmate he was after was Mangione.

Prison workers eventually asked Anderson for his credentials, but all he had was his Minnesota driver’s license.

Anderson also allegedly “threw at the BOP officers numerous documents” and claimed he had weapons in his bag. Upon a bag search, authorities found a barbecue fork and a “round steel blade” that looked like a pizza cutter, according to NBC News.

On Wednesday, January 28, Anderson was arrested and on Thursday, January 29 he was charged for the crime of impersonating a federal agent, per NBC News.

As the National Enquirer previously reported, Mangione has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The late businessman was fatally shot in Manhattan in December 2024. Mangione has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial behind bars.
