Goat Leads Colorado Firefighters To Blaze, Helps With ‘Fuel Mitigation’ Along The Way
A goat led firefighters to a smoking hotspot in the woods of Colorado, and assisted with “fuel mitigation” by munching brush along the way, officials said.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department said firefighters working the Rock Creek Canyon Fire got an “unexpected escort” — an apparently pregnant goat.
The “very determined goat” led firefighters to the fire, and “helped with some fuel mitigation along the way,” the fire department joked, referring to the goat stopping to graze on some bushes.
A video shared by the fire department shows the brown and white goat, which has a swollen belly and visible udders, happily trotting alongside firefighters.
“Every crew needs a good leader… apparently ours has four legs,” the fire department said. “We’re not saying he’s ready for a badge… but we’re also not saying he isn’t.”
The Southern Colorado Interagency Wildland Fire team said Wednesday that the goat helped firefighters get both into and out of the woods safely.
“This home owner’s goat was first on scene at today’s Rock Creek Canyon Fire and took it upon herself to lead fire crews in and out of the fire helping them pick the best route,” the wildland fire team said.
“She even made some of those inpatient goat noises when we stopped just to make sure we knew that we needed to follow her and keep up,” the team said. “So please join us as we give a huge shout out to this cute little path finder who indeed was the GOAT of the Rock Creek Canyon Fire today ensuring all Crews got off the mountain safely.”
As of Thursday evening, the Rock Creek Canyon Fire was 50% contained.
