A silo fire in Florida sparked a “dust explosion” that ignited a second silo and a brush fire Thursday night, officials said.
Polk County Fire Rescue said crews responded at around 4:26 p.m. Thursday to a reported silo fire at a business that sells mulch products, located near the intersection of Lasso Lane and Maine Avenue in an industrial area of Lakeland. Firefighters arrived “minutes later” to find smoke coming from a silo.
As crews began working to extinguish the fire, “a dust explosion shot out of the silo,” the fire department said. The explosion spread fire to a second silo and sparked a nearby brush fire.
Another crew responded to the scene to battle the brush fire while the first crew continued working to extinguish the silos.
No injuries were reported. The brush fire was extinguished, the silos were hosed down, and crews cleared the scene at around 11 p.m. The fire department said it released the scene back to the property’s management to “watch the fire burn itself out.”
