Elijah Wood Reveals He’s Often Mistaken for Tobey Maguire: ‘It’s Always for Spider-Man’

Elijah Wood says many people think he’s the man behind the famous mask — not his fellow former child star Tobey Maguire, who played the superhero in three movies from 2002 to 2007 and again in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“Most recently, I think it was actually Tobey Maguire, which does still happen, and it’s always for Spider-Man. It’s not for any of Tobey’s other work,” Wood said when asked which celebrity he’s most often mistaken for on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“It’s just like, ‘Hey, Spider-Man,” the Lord of the Rings star, 45, revealed. “I won’t correct people.”
“Maybe they think you’re actually Spider-Man, not Tobey Maguire,” mused host Josh Horowitz on the Thursday, April 2 episode.
“Maybe you’re right,” Wood jokingly agreed. “Maybe I’ve got it wrong all this time. That’s possible.”
But Maguire, 50, has previously revealed the mistaken identity goes both ways.
“No joke, I once signed an autograph as Elijah Wood because the fan was so excited,” Maguire admitted during a Reddit AMA in 2022. “I didn’t want to disappoint her by telling her I wasn’t Elijah.”
