A Missouri motorist and their dog were rescued after clinging to branches for more than eight hours after their car was swept away by water, officials said.

The Pettis County Fire Department said crews were dispatched to Oak Grove Lane, west of Sedalia, at around 5:20 p.m. on Monday, June 8, following a report that a car had been swept off the low water crossing. They arrived to find the victim holding onto tree branches along with their dog, and deployed a boat to reach them.

The driver and their dog had been in the water since 9 a.m., and were ultimately found by a passerby. The individual was evaluated at the scene by Pettis County Ambulance personnel.

Photos shared by the fire department show water flowing across Oak Grove Lane. The victim’s vehicle can be seen almost completely submerged next to a cluster of tree roots and branches at the bottom of a steep embankment.

“We appreciate the assistance of Pettis County Sherrif’s [sic] Department and Pettis County Ambulance,” the fire department said. “It was a great team effort on the rescue.”
