Dog Rescued After Falling Over Cliff While Chasing A Rabbit

A dog that fell over a 40-foot cliff while chasing a rabbit in Washington was recently rescued by deputies and reunited with her owner.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said a resident called for help on July 8 after hearing a dog in distress in the area of the 23600 block of Rim Road E. in Graham. The dog had fallen approximately 40 feet down a cliffside while chasing a rabbit.

The sheriff’s Search and Rescue Ropes Team responded to the scene and hoisted a deputy down to the dog, which was “overjoyed” to see him.

A video shared by the sheriff’s office shows the deputy playing with the dog at the bottom of the cliff.

“The dog’s too friendly,” he shouts to rescuers at the top of the cliff. “I can’t get it to sit still, it’s just so happy to see somebody.”

A deputy off-camera says the dog has “been down there all night.”

“It won’t stop licking me,” the first deputy says.

After getting the dog back to safety, the owner could not immediately be located, and it was taken to the Tacoma Humane Society for safekeeping. Authorities later learned the dog was named Nico, and she was reunited with her owners the next day.

“We are glad Nico was ok, and reunited with her family,” the sheriff’s office said. “We hope she will be more careful chasing rabbits in the future.”
