U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers in Texas over the weekend seized nearly 9,000 rounds of ammunition from a Mexican citizen traveling from the U.S. to Mexico.

CBP Office of Field Operations officers working at the Los Indios International Bridge, west of the Brownsville Port of Entry, on Nov. 9 encountered a 2008 Chevrolet driven by a 65-year-old Mexican man and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection using nonintrusive equipment and a canine unit.

During the inspection, officers discovered 8,984 rounds of unreported ammunition of varying calibers hidden within the vehicle. The ammunition included .22, .357, .38, .40, .44, 9mm, and 10mm calibers.

“Our officers work diligently conducting inbound and outbound inspections, and their perseverance and dedication to the border security mission led to this significant seizure of ammunition,” said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry.

CBP seized the ammunition and the vehicle, while Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the driver and launched an investigation.
