‘Brave’ Teen Killed By Lightning Strike On Colorado Mountain Was Protecting Younger Brother

A teenager killed by a lightning strike on a Colorado mountain on Sunday has been identified by his family, who said he was bravely protecting his brother, who was also injured.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded along with firefighters, EMS, and the Alpine rescue team to a report that a lightning strike injured at least one person at the summit of Mount Blue Sky at around 1:22 p.m. Sunday.

Denver Mountain Parks rangers were the first to arrive at the scene and immediately began lifesaving measures on the victim, identified as 15-year-old Levi Strobel, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead.

A second victim, Levi’s younger brother, was airlifted by Fight for Life Colorado to a Denver-area hospital. Two adult men sustained minor injuries.

Levi and his brother were among a party of five hiking when the incident occurred. A statement from his family, shared by the sheriff’s office along with a photo, described Levi as a “deeply loved” son, brother, and friend.

“In his final moments, Levi showed the courage and selflessness that characterized his life, seeking to protect his younger brother, who was with him on the mountain. He was a brave and loving brother, and we will always remember the devotion he showed to those he loved,” his family wrote. “Please honor Levi’s memory by remembering his joyful spirit, his faith, his bravery, and the love he showed for his family.”
