BASE Jumper Rescued After Crashing Into Utah Cliff And Getting Stuck
A man was hospitalized in Utah Wednesday after crashing into a cliff while BASE jumping, authorities said.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said a “large scale search and rescue operation” was underway in the Kane Creek area near Moab Wednesday following a “BASE jumper incident.”
BASE is an acronym for Buildings, Antennas, Spans (bridges), and Earth (cliffs), the objects from which BASE jumpers leap with parachutes. The extreme sport is considered particularly dangerous, and is illegal in many places, including national parks.
A photo shared by the sheriff’s office shows a man dangling from a cliff face, where his brightly colored parachute appears to be snagged.
The man was ultimately rescued and transported to an area hospital. No further information about his condition was released.
