Authorities in Colorado are seeking the public’s help after a pair of horses were shot with a pellet gun over two nights, with one of them being struck 36 times.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said its Animal Protection officers are investigating a “disturbing case of animal cruelty” that took place over two nights on Aug. 10 and 11 on the 12000 block of Flagg Drive.

Both horses on the property — American Quarter horses named Chief and Mystic — were shot with a pellet gun. One horse was struck once, and the other was struck 36 times. Both injured horses are expected to recover.

The sheriff’s office shared images of Chief, with a red coat, and Mystic, with a turquoise saddle blanket.

According to investigators, there were no security cameras in the area to capture the incident or possible suspects, and no neighbors reported hearing anything.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who may have information to come forward. Investigators are also seeking any video footage of suspicious activity or vehicles in the area between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Aug. 10 and 11.

“Did you notice anything unusual those nights? Have you seen similar incidents in the area? Did you see any suspicious vehicles or activity?” the sheriff’s office asked. “Even small details can help.”

Anyone with information is asked to email Animal Protection Officer Abbott at rabbott@bouldercounty.gov.
