Armed Man Arrested Near Seattle’s Space Needle During New Year’s Eve Celebration

A Seattle man armed with multiple firearms and ammunition was arrested during New Year’s Eve celebrations near the Space Needle, police said.

The Seattle Police Department said that at around 7:20 p.m. on Dec. 31, patrol officers responded to reports of a man holding a “partially concealed” shotgun while sitting on a bench near the Pacific Science Center. Witnesses reported the suspect was “holding the gun by the grip” while facing a crowd of spectators gathered to view fireworks.

The suspect, described as a 21-year-old man wearing all black clothing and a red hat with “WAR” printed on it, was arrested without incident and cooperated with officers, police said.

The suspect was found in possession of a shotgun, pistol, and multiple rounds of ammunition. Police said the man had a valid concealed carry permit.

Detectives and SPD’s Arson Bomb Squad responded to assist patrol officers in a search of the suspect’s vehicle for potential weapons or explosives, and found none.

The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for unlawful use of weapons, and the case has been referred to the City Attorney’s Office for formal criminal charges.

Police said the Emergency Services Unit that provides security for the Seattle Center issued the man a one-year trespass warning.
