A Georgia man who unsuccessfully attempted to cash a fraudulent check allegedly returned “minutes” later wearing a mask and made a bomb threat in an attempted robbery, police said.

Gwinnett County Police said officers responded on July 1 to a report of a bomb threat and robbery in progress at a check-cashing store near the 2000 block of Lawrenceville Highway in Lawrenceville.

Police spokesperson Brock Marks told WSB-TV the suspect held what appeared to be a detonator, “passed along a note claiming that he had a bomb and a handgun” and demanded cash. The clerk instead called police and the suspect fled with nothing.

A helicopter was deployed to assist in the search for the suspect, but detectives reviewing surveillance video found that the suspect had shown his face.

“He was actually shown on camera attempting to cash that fraudulent check prior,” Marks told the outlet.

According to police, 29-year-old Jordan McLain had entered the store unmasked and tried to cash a “fake” $2,900 check just minutes before the robbery attempt.

The helicopter and license plate cameras tracked the suspect’s vehicle. McLain was stopped near Seaboard Industrial Boulevard and taken into custody without incident.

McLain was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on charges of terroristic threats and acts, forgery in the third degree, robbery by intimidation, and wearing a mask to conceal identity.
