Four people are facing charges in Florida after a toddler allegedly consumed methamphetamines that were hidden inside a sippy cup, authorities said.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) alerted detectives on Feb. 24 that a one-year-old had ingested methamphetamine the day prior. Investigators learned the child had drunk from a sippy cup that the parents “later discovered” had a bag of meth at the bottom.

Even after learning of the exposure, however, none of the adults in the home called 911 or otherwise sought medical treatment for the child, opting instead to monitor the child overnight. When the child began vomiting, the mother took them to a nearby fire station. The child was then admitted to the hospital for treatment of a possible overdose.

Detectives executed a search warrant at the residence and found drug paraphernalia including glass pipes with methamphetamine residue.

All four permanent residents of the home were arrested and booked into the Nassau County Jail and Detention Center. Hayden Simmons, Damien Windham, Erica Foley, and Judith Addison were each charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm. Foley was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bonds were set at more than $25,000 for Simmons, more than $25,000 for Windham, more than $12,500 for Foley, and more than $5,000 for Addison.

“This is a heartbreaking and completely preventable situation. A one-year-old child was exposed to a dangerous, illegal drug because the adults in that home failed to provide even the most basic level of care and protection,” Sheriff Bill Leeper said. “There is absolutely no excuse for methamphetamine to be within reach of a child.”
