The U.S. Coast Guard came to the rescue of a 13-year-old boy who became stranded on a cliff 200 feet above a California beach on Monday night.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay were alerted by a California State Parks lifeguard at 7:51 p.m. Monday that a teenager was stranded on a cliff ledge approximately 200 feet above the shoreline on the south side of Agate Beach at Sue-Meg State Park.

The 13-year-old boy had been “climbing recreationally” but was unable to get back down the cliff.

Parks personnel and local fire and rescue units remained on scene while the U.S. Coast Guard launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew. The air crew coordinated with responders on the ground and safely hoisted the boy from the cliff.

Due to “limited landing areas” inside the park, the boy was flown to Air Station Humboldt Bay in good condition. No injuries were reported.

In coordination with Cal Fire and California State Parks, the boy was reunited with his parents.
