SantaCon President Stefan Pildes Accused of Raising Millions for Charity, Pocketing It for Himself
The organizer of a Christmas-themed pub crawl faces accusations he’s a modern-day Scrooge after raising millions for charity and then allegedly funneling it into his own pockets.
Stefan Pildes, the president of SantaCon, was arrested on April 15, with prosecutors alleging the 50-year-old’s annual holiday season drink fest in New York City funded his lavish lifestyle — despite telling ticket holders the cash went to “dozens of arts and charitable causes,” per SantaCon’s website.
He’s been charged with one count of wire fraud and faces up to 20 years in prison, The New York Post reported.
Though Pildes has pleaded not guilty, law enforcement contends the defendant greedily diverted more than half of the $2.7 million in proceeds SantaCon generated between 2019 and 2024 to finance personal ventures, plus blew hundreds of thousands of dollars of the remaining proceeds on private expenses, an indictment obtained by National Enquirer states.
According to the indictment, the seemingly shady party promoter — who claimed he didn’t receive compensation from his raucous Big Apple event — spent the dubious dough on concert tickets, Michelin-starred meals, a high-end vehicle and luxury getaways to Hawaii, Las Vegas and Vail, Colo.
The Hewitt, N.J., resident also allegedly used stolen money to pay for over $365,000 worth of renovations on a lakefront property in New Jersey, while another $124,000 went toward the lease of a Manhattan apartment.
“He took advantage of New Yorkers’ generous holiday spirit to finance his lifestyle through personal expenses, big and small,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton said in a press release. “No matter how you dress it up, fraud is fraud.”
Currently out on a $300,000 bond, mastermind Pildes defrauded tens of thousands of individuals and small business owners who participated in SantaCon, per the indictment.
Each year, the lively bar crawl attracts roughly 25,000 revelers who booze it up dressed as Santa Claus, elves and other festive figures. Ticket costs range between $10 and $20.
