The former Broadway costars, who have been romantically linked since January 2025, may find it difficult to talk politics, according to a Friday, May 1, report in journalist Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack.
The Deadpool & Wolverine star, 57, has maintained a friendship with President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump over the years, and a source told People in March that she was “cheering him on” when he performed at a party for Rupert Murdoch’s birthday.
The Tony Award-winning actress, 51, however, has been vocal of her support of the LGBTQ+ community and is a prominent figure on Broadway, where politics tend to skew more liberal.
According to one of Shuter’s sources, “Sutton’s politics are very different” than what Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, represent. “[Sutton is] vocal about where she stands, and the Ivanka-Jared circle is not a world she feels comfortable in — socially or politically.”
However, according to a Naughty But Nice source, “Hugh and Ivanka go way back.”
“This isn’t some casual Hollywood friendship,” the source added. “They’ve stayed genuinely close for years, and that relationship has never really changed.”

It’s no surprise that the former Thoroughly Modern Millie star was reportedly a no-show for the event celebrating Murdoch, 95, that also was said to include a special video message from the president, 79.
“That room was never going to be Sutton’s scene,” a source told Shuter. “And seeing Hugh so comfortable in that crowd — especially with Ivanka there — definitely hit a nerve.”
For now, it seems like Foster and Jackman’s relationship will still continue forward.
“They care deeply about each other,” a source said. “But when politics enters the conversation, it can get tense fast. That’s where the real sparks fly.”
In 2018, Variety reported that a birthday party for Jackman made headlines because Trump’s daughter, 44, and her husband, 45, were among the guests.
However, Jackman made it clear that their friendship has nothing to do with what he believes. “I’ve known those guys for 15 years, and we don’t talk politics at birthday parties,” he said, according to Variety.
