A Georgia game warden recently caught a man illegally fishing with an unusual technique: using an antique crank telephone to shock the fish.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division said Sgt. Matt Garthright and Game Warden Chason Brogdon were on a routine patrol of public fishing spots in Wilkes County when they encountered a man and woman fishing in a creek. As the officers approached, the man moved away with a wooden box in his hands, and threw it into the creek.
Garthright retrieved the box from the water and found it was an old crank telephone used to shock fish, “an outlawed fishing technique.”
A photo shared by Georgia DNR shows the telephone — an upright wooden box with a crank handle on the side and loose wiring spilling out.
Georgia DNR said neither the man nor the woman had valid fishing licenses, and were “given the opportunity to get in compliance by immediately purchasing fishing licenses online.”
The man was charged with shocking fish, and the vintage telephone was confiscated.
