An alleged drunken driver left his wrecked truck in the middle of a Florida highway with a case of mostly empty beer bottles inside, authorities said Wednesday.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 near Martin Highway on Wednesday. The driver struck a guardrail then abandoned the wrecked truck in the center lane, perpendicular to the flow of traffic.

The driver, identified as 29-year-old Galindo Juarez-Perez, had fled on foot but was quickly located. He surrendered to deputies near the Martin Highway overpass and was taken into custody.

According to the sheriff’s office, Juarez-Perez has never been issued a Florida driver’s license, and told deputies he is originally from Guatemala. Authorities did not specify his immigration status.

Juarez-Perez was transported to the Martin County Jail for processing, and faces charges of DUI, leaving the scene of a crash involving damage, possession of heroin, driving without a valid license, and resisting arrest.

“Traffic was disrupted for some time, but fortunately, no one was injured in the incident,” the sheriff’s office said.
