Police in Florida said they were investigating an alleged violation of a protection order that led to a separate animal cruelty charge when surveillance video showed the suspect allegedly throwing his dog on the ground.

The DeLand Police Department said officers responded to a residence on South Hill Avenue at around 6:49 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a “civil complaint” about a possible violation of a protection order. When they arrived, a witness said they believed 45-year-old Christopher Whitley had violated a protection order and had been abusing his dog.

Officers were reviewing surveillance video related to the alleged violation when they found video from earlier in the day allegedly showing Whitley abusing his dog.

A video clip shared by the police department shows a man next to a golf cart. The man grabs a dog from the cart by its caller and throws the animal to the ground.

Whitely was arrested and charged with animal cruelty as well as violating a protection order.

Police said the dog showed “no visible injuries” when they arrived. It was taken to the police department’s kennels after no one at the scene was able to take custody of it.
