If youve ever felt like youve lost your mind, Tony Award-nominated playwright Bill Russell invites you to come find it again — through song.
In November, The York Theatre will present a sneak peak of “Has Anyone Seen My Mind?,” the sixteenth full-length musical from author and lyricist Bill Russell (“Side Show,” “Elegies for Angels,” “Punks and Raging Queens”), with direction by Justin Ross Cohen (“Romeo and Bernadette”).
Described as witty and incisive, the show takes audiences inside modern anxieties and absurdities — from technology and relationships to theater and the state of the world — with humor, reflection, and a healthy dose of satire. The cast features Erin Davie (“Side Show,” “Grey Gardens,” “Diana”), Taylor Iman Jones (“Six,” “Hamilton,” “Head Over Heels”), Kelvin Moon Loh (“Beetlejuice,” “SpongeBob” “SquarePants,” “The King and I”), and Ryan Silverman (“Chicago,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Passion”).
“This is an evening of laughs, catchy tunes, amazement, and outrage about whats on all our minds,” Russell says.
Russell’s work has been staged internationally in the U.K., Australia, Japan, Germany, Sweden, and beyond. A two-time Tony nominee for book and lyrics of “Side Show,” his other credits include “Pageant,” “Unexpected Joy,” “Lucky Duck,” and “The Last Smoker in America.”
The production includes music by Janet Hood (“Elegies for Angels,” “Punks and Raging Queens”), Nick Cearley (“The Skivvies”), and Ron Melrose (“Jersey Boys”), with orchestrations and music direction by Mark Hartman (“Avenue Q,” “Sondheim on Sondheim”). The band features Jakubu Griffin on drums, Saadi Zain on bass, and Beth Callen on guitar.
Director Justin Ross Cohen brings his extensive Broadway and Off-Broadway experience, following acclaimed directing and choreography projects ranging from “Romeo and Bernadette” to the film “Waiting for Yvette.” Cohen is also well known for his acting career, having appeared in “A Chorus Line” on Broadway and in the film adaptation.
The York Theatre, known as “Where Musicals Come to Life,” is one of New York Citys most important incubators of new musical works, as well as a vital preserver of past classics. The company has received critical acclaim for over five decades, earning an Emmy nomination, Drama Desk Award for developing and producing new musicals, an Outer Critics Circle Award for 50 years of achievement.
With biting humor, a powerhouse cast, and songs that tap into the collective state of mind, “Has Anyone Seen My Mind?” promises a musical journey through todays chaos thats both relatable and revelatory — a reminder, as Russell puts it, not to lose our minds in the process.
Performances will take place on four consecutive Mondays — Nov. 3, 10, 17, and 24 — at 7:00 p.m. at New York City’s Laurie Beechman Theatre. Tickets are priced at $50, with $80 VIP options, and are available at thebeechman.com or by calling 212-695-6909.
