Teacher Accused of Abusing Students Hopes to Avoid Prison by Blaming Unusually High Romantic Drive
A teacher in Australia is hoping to avoid prison time for sexually assaulting her students by saying her recently diagnosed bipolar disorder led to uncontrollable hypersexuality.
Taya Brailey was arrested in August of 2024 and pleaded guilty to having intercourse and other acts with boys at her school. She also admitted to two child abuse material charges related to the exchange of photographs online, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Brailey, 32, said she slept with a 17-year-old boy in his car in July of that year after agreeing to meet up with him after school in a secluded area. The same month, she also began chatting with a 16-year-old student on Snapchat, enticing him into trading explicit photos by asking, “Do you like what you see?”
The outlet reports she sent him an image of herself in the shower and asked him to send back a video, which he did. She also said she touched the same boy in her classroom after class one day. At the time, Brailey had been married for about a year.
“Her s*x drive had increased substantially that she couldn’t control what she was doing, that she felt hypersexual that some of those urges were not being met in her home environment,” the prosecutor said, per the outlet.
However, the other side argues that she noticed the changes within herself and didn’t seek help. Instead, she not only committed her crimes but took steps to hide them by asking the boys not to tell anyone.
It’s worth noting that the age of consent in the area she lives is 16 years old. However, there are laws that make it illegal to perform any adult acts with a person under their care, which Brailey’s status as a teacher violates.
“My entire life is laid bare on criminal social media and television. It has been very confronting accepting this as a reality,” Brailey said in a letter to the court. She and her team hope that she can serve her conviction from outside of prison. She will return to court on October 16 for sentencing, according to the outlet.
