As the PUMP Act marks its second anniversary, many American parents continue to grapple with challenges in accessing breast pumps, a vital tool for new mothers, especially those who work.

The act, which expanded workplace protections for nursing parents, did not address the requirement for a medical prescription before insurance covers the devices.

“Many new parents are shocked to discover they need a doctor’s prescription for a breast pump to qualify for insurance coverage,” says Andrea Ippolito, founder and CEO of maternal health tech platform SimpliFed. “Why is this impactful? When these prescriptions are delayed or denied, it creates unnecessary stress during an already challenging time and disrupts the entire feeding journey.”

SimpliFed. has introduced a solution to this problem through its comprehensive medical care pathway, offering valid breast pump prescriptions as part of its telehealth services. This approach streamlines the process for parents, eliminating the need for additional appointments or multiple calls to healthcare providers.

The timing of this initiative coincides with ongoing discussions about maternal care accessibility. Despite the PUMP Act’s implementation two years ago, gaps remain in the equipment acquisition process, leaving many parents without the support they need.

SimpliFed’s efforts come as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) introduces groundbreaking new guidelines, the most significant update since 1930, which embrace virtual care models. These guidelines create a massive opportunity in the maternal health market, emphasizing the importance of timely access to feeding equipment.

As the maternal health landscape continues to evolve, services like SimpliFed aim to ensure that new parents receive the support they need to navigate the challenges of early parenthood.
