The U.S. Secret Service has placed an agent on leave and revoked his security clearance after he posted negative comments about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk following his death, two U.S. officials confirmed.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, first reported by Real Clear Politics, Anthony Pough wrote that Kirk had “spewed hate and racism on his show … at the end of the day, you answer to GOD, and speak things into existence. You can only circumvent karma, she doesnt leave.”

The post drew swift backlash online and within the agency.

In a memo to staff that was shared with CBS News, Secret Service Director Sean Curran addressed the issue and warned staff against exacerbating political tensions.

“Let me be clear, politically motivated attacks in our nation are increasing — seemingly every day,” Curran wrote. “The men and women of the Secret Service must be focused on being the solution, not adding to the problem.”

A Secret Service spokesperson said in a statement, “The U.S. Secret Service will not tolerate behavior that violates our code of conduct. This employee was immediately put on administrative leave, and an investigation has begun.”

Curran’s memo, sent Thursday night, reminded staff of their oath to conduct themselves with “the highest standards of conduct on and off duty.”

He added, “When our actions draw public attention for the wrong reasons, we fall short of that duty and compromise the trust essential to fulfill our mission. We must operate every day without bias towards political affiliation. Any distractions, otherwise, will not be tolerated.”

Kirk, 30, was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, September 10.

President Donald Trump confirmed the suspected shooter had been taken into custody.

“I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him — in custody … everyone did a great job,” Trump told Fox and Friends on September 12, per NBC. “Essentially, somebody that was very close to him turned him in.”

According to multiple outlets, including Associated Press and BBC, the alleged suspect has been identified as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah.
