RV Fire Spreads To Shipping Containers Of Fireworks, Sparking Explosions In Texas

What began as a “small fire” in an RV in Texas Wednesday afternoon spread to containers of fireworks, sparking explosions and prompting the shutdown of the nearby railroad, officials said.

The Spring Fire Department said “dozens of fire units” ultimately responded to control the fire that originally began in an RV on the 23300 block of Kuykendahl Road near the intersection with Hufsmith-Kuykendahl Road. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office also responded.

Per reports, one person was inside the RV when the fire began but escaped without injury. According to the fire marshal’s office, the fire spread from the RV to three shipping containers of fireworks nearby, sparking explosions. The fire further spread to a railroad property and nearby woods.

The fire marshal’s office said the railroad was notified to halt all train traffic in the area while firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Road traffic in the area was also diverted.

A bystander video shared by the Texas Emergency Communications Center showed a fireworks sparking within a massive plume of smoke rising from the scene.

“We know America’s 250th birthday is coming up… but I don’t think this is what they meant by ‘starting the celebration early’,” the agency wrote alongside the video.

Several neighboring fire departments were called in to assist throughout the evening, as the fire spread to trailers and surrounding vegetation. Brush trucks and additional tankers responded to assist with the “rapidly spreading brush fire,” the Woodlands Fire Department said.

Photos shared by the Woodlands Fire Department show the shipping containers still smoldering and sparking well after dark.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
