Multiple politicians from both sides of the aisle paid tribute to former vice president Dick Cheney at his funeral at National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, November 20 — but President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were MIA.
Though it is customary for living presidents and vice presidents to attend funerals of former holders of the office, Trump and Vance were not among the 1,000 people invited to attend, a White House official confirmed to CBS News.

Former president George W. Bush, with whom Cheney served for eight years, was set to speak, while former president Joe Biden, former vice presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, Al Gore and Dan Quayle — along with multiple senators, congress members and Supreme Court justices — were in attendance.
Cheney, who died at 84 on November 3, was a vocal critic of the president.
“In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney once said in a video supporting his daughter, Liz — one of the Republican congress members who voted to impeach the president following the January 6 riots — in her reelection campaign in 2022, adding that the president was a “coward.”
