Over 30 Cats Rescued From Abandoned ‘Ghost’ Boat In Washington

Authorities responding to a report of an abandoned boat in the waters off a Washington beach found more than 30 cats and kittens trapped on board.

The Tacoma Police Department said its Marine Services Unit responded to reports of an abandoned boat in the waters off Owen Beach on Thursday, Aug. 6. Officers were surprised to find more than 30 cats and kittens living in “unsafe conditions” on board.

In a two-day effort, in coordination with Animal Control and the police department’s forensics unit, all of the animals were safely rescued.

“Many of the cats were frightened and malnourished, requiring patience, care, and a tremendous amount of teamwork from our members,” the police department said.

The cats are reportedly believed to have been on the boat for months, meaning someone had been visiting to provide food and water. Police were searching for the boat’s owner, and did not provide any further details on possible charges.

“We’re proud of our Marine Services officers, Animal Control officers, and Forensic Technicians for their compassion and dedication — not only to the people they serve, but to every member of our community who needs a helping hand,” police said.
