A shocking new detail has emerged in the murders of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

On Thursday, January 15, the New York Times reported that their son and alleged killer, Nick Reiner, was placed into a yearlong mental health conservatorship in 2020, with a clerk at the Los Angeles Superior Court confirming that it ended in 2021.

“[Mental health] is an epidemic that is widely misunderstood and this is a horrible tragedy,” Steven Baer, a licensed fiduciary and Nick’s former conservator, told the outlet amid reports that the 32-year-old was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the death of his parents.

As the National Enquirer previously reported, Nick has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder related to the December 14 deaths of Rob, 78, and Michele, 70 — and could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.

After being placed on suicide watch, he is being held in a high-observation mental health unit at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles while he awaits trial, per People.

High-powered attorney Alan Jackson was originally set to represent Nick, only to announce on Wednesday, January 7, that he was no longer on the case.

Still, Jackson, 61, has reiterated his belief in the screenwriter’s innocence.

“What we’ve learned and you can take this to the bank, is that pursuant to the laws of this state, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder,” he told reporters outside of a Los Angeles courthouse. “Print that. We wish him the very best moving forward.”
