Netflix Accused of Capitalizing on ‘Michael’ Success With New Michael Jackson Trial Doc
As Netflix prepares to release its new Michael Jackson documentary, Michael Jackson: The Verdict, the streamer has been hit with backlash over its coverage of the late artist’s child molestation trial.
Jackson — who died in June 2009 at age 50 — was charged with multiple counts of child molestation in 2003. After a highly-publicized trial, Jackson was acquitted on all counts.
Netflix, seemingly riding the success of the recent biopic Michael, has been slammed by fans of the “Billie Jean” singer as “disgraceful.”
“Every other studio is regretting that they passed on the Michael movie that ended up being a huge success,” one fan tweeted. “So they make this in retaliation to try and gain some money from it all? What a joke.”
“These documentaries often feel like clickbait designed to profit off of a legend’s name,” another tweeted.
The three-part docuseries, which is set to premiere on June 3, will feature firsthand accounts from jurors, witnesses and other key players.
“We believe he was a criminal and he was able to get away with it because of his fame and celebrity,” co-lead prosecutor Ron Zonen says in the trailer.
