Men Battle Haircut Anxiety With Photos, Trust, And Years Of Loyalty

Men fear the barbers chair more than you think — and many are too anxious to ask for the haircut they actually want.

A recent survey of 2,000 U.S. men found that 21% feel nervous asking their barber or stylist for a new hairstyle, while 23% said theyve been too afraid to request a specific cut in the past — even when they really wanted it. Seventeen percent said theyve softened the blow by requesting a “watered down” version of the style they were actually going for.

The poll, conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Sport Clips Haircuts, suggests many men struggle to communicate their desired look, but that success often lies in visuals and building long-term relationships. Thirty-six percent of respondents said theyve shown their stylist a reference photo to get the haircut they want — and of those, 88% said their stylist nailed the look exactly.

More than half of men (57%) have a specific person they rely on for haircuts, and 74% say that trust in a stylist or barber strongly influences the cut they receive. That connection runs deep for many: 32% of men with a regular stylist say they consider them “practically family,” 16% see them as part of their close friend group, and 29% think of them as friends — at least during the haircut.

“I think men really can experiment and change things up with their hair,” said Stacia Kelley, artistic director at Sport Clips “It just takes a bit of trust and communication with your stylist. If you explain to them what you’re looking for and let them show you their expertise, you’ll likely walk away feeling refreshed and confident with a brand new ‘do.”

Men who develop that rapport are often learning more about how to manage their hair, too. Forty-one percent say their stylist has helped them understand which styles fit their hair type, and 40% have learned what styles suit their face shape. Another 37% now know how often to come in for a haircut, while 31% have been taught how to style and maintain their look at home — and what different clipper lengths actually mean.

Despite some hesitation, many men are open to trying new styles. While 84% said they currently feel confident with their haircut, and 55% have never seriously considered changing it, 45% have at least thought about switching things up — even if they havent yet taken the plunge.

The average man gets his hair cut 10 times per year and has kept the same hairstyle for seven years. But when asked what other styles they think they could pull off, 28% said theyd consider letting their hair grow out, and 22% said they could go fully bald. Thirteen percent felt they could rock long hair with either a middle part or a hard side part. Other styles men think they could confidently wear include spiked hair (11%), highlights (11%), greased-back hair (10%), a mullet (8%), a mohawk (8%), or a bleached buzzcut (7%).

“Hairstyles are one of the primary ways men showcase who they are; really letting their personalities shine through,” said Kelley. “Many men who are already used to the style that makes them feel confident and comfortable might not want to change things. Even if they are considering trying a new style, they often dont because they don’t want to change what they believe has been working for them for so long.”
