Man Accused of Attacking 80-Year-Old Grandmother, Disabling Her Life Alert to Prevent Escape

A man in Utah was arrested for allegedly beating and torturing his grandmother, going as far as to disable her Life Alert to keep her from contacting authorities for help.

Kaden Robert Baird was arrested on Saturday, September 5, and charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, intentional aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult, threat of violence and damage/interrupt communication device, according to records viewed by the National Enquirer.

KUTV reported that an 80-year-old woman called police after allegedly escaping the home when Baird, 32, went to the basement after spending hours abusing her.

When police arrived, they observed injuries on the woman’s body and sent her to the hospital. Once there, she told them that her grandson, Baird, who she lives with, came into her bedroom and repeatedly assaulted her from 1 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The outlet reports she told investigators that her grandson punched her, threw her to the ground, twisted her wrists and ankles and struck her with a cellphone. She also alleged that he put a finger down her throat to restrict her breathing.

She was determined at the hospital to have suffered fractured bones in her back and a broken left wrist, in addition to bruising all over her back, forehead and arms. It’s unclear what triggered the hours of abuse, but police reported that he seemed heavily intoxicated when they took him into custody.

Baird’s grandmother said she communicated to him during the attack that she wanted to call the police, per KUTV. He responded by taking and hiding her phone, disabling the home’s Wi-Fi and disabling her Life Alert device. He also allegedly prevented her from leaving the home, which she was only able to do when he was reportedly distracted.
