Kristin Chenoweth found herself at the center of backlash after she commented on Charlie Kirk’s final Instagram post after he was assassinated during the first stop of his American Comeback Tour on September 10.
Chenoweth, 57, recently addressed the situation and told The Hollywood Reporter that the anger from her fans “almost broke” her. While she refused to expand on the situation anymore than that, she didn’t completely shy away from talking about where she stands regarding certain views.
Chenoweth’s new show, The Queen of Versailles, has the former Glee actress playing a wealthy one-percenter, and the outlet described the production as a “Trumpian satire.”
“I chose to do this piece, for what it’s saying about us — as a country, and where we are at,” she explained. “There are lines we wrote — way before any presidential election — that now are harrowing. Harrowing. And I’m not going to talk about politics, because I’m not a political person.”
Chenoweth didn’t appear to realize the amount of backlash she would receive for her comments on Kirk’s final Instagram post.

“I’m. So. Upset. Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak,” Chenoweth wrote in the comments section at the time. She signed off with a broken heart emoji.
Her comments set off a firestorm within some of her LGBTQ+ fans, which make up a large portion of her fanbase. Kirk repeatedly voiced opposition to LGBTQ+-inclusive policies, and Chenoweth’s comments angered several people.
“I saw what happened [to Kirk] online with my own eyes, and I had a human moment of reflection,” the Broadway star later said on NY1, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s no secret that I’m an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.”
