Katy Perry is sparking debate after a birthday cake she threw at a colleague ended up smashed on the floor.
The “Dark Horse” singer — who turned 41 on October 25 — came under fire after an X user shared a video showing Perry backstage after one of her shows, blowing out the candles on a birthday cake and then tossing it at an employee.
Perry’s aim, however, missed its mark. The cake landed on the floor instead of the intended recipient, and the video shows her backup dancers digging in and eating the dessert straight off the ground.
The person who posted the clip claimed the cake was baked by their mother.
“My mom was the one that baked this cake, she was so excited about the opportunity to make a cake for Katy Perry and spent so long on it, im genuinely confused and upset as to why she would do this,” the user wrote. (It has not been confirmed whether this tweet was written in jest or not.)
The video, which has racked up 7.5 million views, sparked a flurry of reactions. Some users sided with the baker, expressing dismay at the waste.
“This broke my heart. Please tell your mom her cake was beautiful. She put love into something special and it deserved way more respect than that,” one wrote.
“I wonder what having that mindset is like, to just throw away a whole cake everyone could’ve enjoyed… and then leaving that mess on the floor for someone else to clean up cause I know damn well she ain’t pick up no broom and mop after lol,” another tweeted.
Others struggled to understand Perry’s intentions. “In other parts of the world, there are kids who can’t even have a cake on their birthday? It’s such a waste and sign of disrespect to the baker who put so much effort to create the cake,” one user wrote.

But some fans defended Perry, arguing the incident isn’t a big deal.
“As a baker, if I got paid then it’s theirs to do what they want with it. Your ‘mom’ is going to get business alone from the fact that Katy had the cake to begin with,” one tweet reads.
“She’s allowed to do whatever she wants with it,” another said, speculating that Perry “likely paid handsomely for the cake.”
“It’s just a cake. Her art is intact and lives on,” a third person wrote.
“Don’t be. She got paid for it. What they do with the product you sell them is their choice. It looks like it was good,” another added in response to the initial tweet. “They ate it off the floor. You could use that as a new catch phrase. ‘Cake so good you would eat it off the floor!’ You’re welcome!”
Perry’s current tour, The Lifetimes Tour, is scheduled to end in December.
