A woman is dead after a man who was stalking her waited for her outside her workplace and shot her before later turning the gun on himself.
Shalini Thakur was fatally shot outside a shopping center in Sacramento, California, on Tuesday, September 8. According to a press release from the Department of Homeland Security, the suspect, Rohit Rohit, was in the United States illegally as of 2023.
According to the release, Rohit, 22, accosted Thakur, 38, outside her work as she was leaving. She attempted to run away, but he chased her and pulled a gun. After shooting her multiple times, he reportedly approached her and shot her in the head at close range before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
When police later caught up with him, he slammed on his brakes. Police tried to coax him out of the vehicle but soon determined that he’d shot himself and was dead behind the wheel.

According to Fox 40, Thakur had accused Rohit of stalking her for nearly a year, even obtaining a restraining order from him in May that he violated. Rohit had reportedly been harassing and stalking the victim since meeting her as a DoorDash driver. She discovered an Apple AirTag that he had hidden under the hood of her car, prompting her to report Rohit’s behavior. She also accused him of deflating her car tires and following her so that he could offer her assistance.
He is accused of obtaining a copy of her apartment key and entering her home while she slept. In the morning, he claimed he was doing a welfare check on her because he grew concerned when she didn’t answer his texts.

After she obtained a restraining order in May, Rohit violated it by sending groceries she did not ask for to her front door.
The Department of Homeland Security notes that Rohit was initially arrested in Arizona in 2023 for entering the country illegally. However, he was released on his own recognizance at the time and stayed in the United States.
