A Florida sheriff said his department is covering veterinary bills for a dog that was allegedly struck by a deputy who left the scene without rendering aid.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Thursday that he has authorized an internal investigation after a witness reported seeing “something that was disturbing to them and disturbing to me.”

“They saw one of our deputy, our patrol vehicles, strike a dog and then continue. Didn’t stop, didn’t try and render aid or anything,” Ivey said in a video message posted to social media.

“I understand that accidents happen, but it’s the afterthought that has me spun up, and I think has everybody else spun up,” he said.

Ivey said the dog is “doing well,” and he has authorized the department’s nonprofit “Sheriff’s Pet Posse” program to cover veterinary bills associated with the incident.

With regard to the internal investigation, Ivey said that “if there is something — anything — that I can take action on, I am going to.”
