A Florida man is facing charges after allegedly being captured on video firing an air rifle at a first responder drone, authorities said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said a Drone As First Responder was launched over the weekend in response to a call in the area of Todd Avenue South in Lehigh Acres. While flying over the area, the drone operator spotted a group of men carrying what appeared to be a firearm.
The drone video shared by the sheriff’s office shows a group of four males, one of whom appears to be carrying a firearm. That individual then aims the weapon at the drone and appears to fire two shots.
Body-worn camera video then shows deputies approaching the group.
“You’re shooting at our drone,” a deputy says. Investigation revealed the weapon was a BB rifle loaded with “steel projectiles.”
Elvin Antonio Callejas-Serrato was arrested on a charge of shooting or throwing deadly missiles into an aircraft.
“The technology we have implemented is used to protect and serve our great residents,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “Our Drone First Responder allows us to quickly respond and keep both our deputies and community safe. If you threaten or harm law enforcement resources, you will be held accountable.”
